Once a strong-hold of the rulers of Vijayanagar, Adoni was later controlled by Muslims until 1792, when a war between the British East India Company and Tipu Sultan resulted in its cession to the Nizam of Hyderabad. Home to a magnificent Jami Masjid, built in 1680, Adoni is now a manufacturing hub for cotton cloth and carpets. Population (2001) 162,458.
